The Art of Effective Communication

4:46 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
Effective communication is an art which requires practicing. Contrary to the popular belief that successful leaders are probably born with a natural talent for speaking, communication skills can actually be honed to perfection.

First of all, articulate clearly. Clarity of speech is important to convey a message across clearly. Speaking slowly is the easiest way to improve on this. Taking a deep breath to calm oneself before speaking is also as effective. When one is nervous or stressed, the rate of speaking might increases. You will soon find yourself blabbing on but without effect when you are nervous. Main point here is to stay calm, think in a clear manner so as to convey the message effectively.

Second, speak clearly. Poor grammar and sloppy speech patterns are often looked down upon. Proper speech is the key here. Read more to improve knowledge and vocabulary. Good grammatical skills are of great advantage as one is often judged on how he or she speaks. You would not want to be viewed as a lazy and disrespectful person.

Thirdly, be considerate. Make the effort to think about everyone you meet. When speaking, make eye contact, put on a good attitude and smile appropriately. Care for others by asking questions and showing interest in the conversation. Remembering personal details that are important and creating small talk can build rapport and stronger relationships rather than just the work at hand. People will treat you with care and respect when you treat them similarly.

Next, give compliments. Giving sincere compliments is another effective way to build instant rapport. Show recognition and interest for jobs well done. Congratulate others on their accomplishments too. Remarks such as “Great job!” or “Well done!” are always appreciated especially after you know that the person has slaved away prior to that achievement. Always bear in mind though that compliments should be appropriate so that they are received with the message intended. For example, commenting on someone’s physical appearance at the workplace is not appropriate, unless you are also very close friends outside of the office.

Last but not least, have confident. You can communicate successfully when you have confidence in yourself. People will believe more in you when you believe in yourself. Having a calm and steady voice does help a lot rather than a mousy squeak. Visual appearance can also exude confidence. So make sure you stand straight and maintain eye contact when speaking. Even the least confident can project an image of confidence by applying the two simple steps.

In short, let us just apply this few ways in our daily routine and let the transformation in us bring us a whole new life! Effective communication is just the way to achieve a better lifestyle. Have fun everyone! :D

A Long Journey

11:50 AM Edit This 0 Comments »
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

This is a popular nursery rhyme for children. Well, I’m not sure if it is still popular nowadays. When I was a child, I did come upon this nursery rhyme. But I don’t think I gave much thought to its meaning. There are many versions for it but the one I put up on this post is the most common one.

For your information, I was born on a Thursday. This means that I have far to go in life. What it actually means I’m not really sure. One can interpret it as ‘a long way to go before one achieves success’ or ‘achieve many many things in life’. Anyhow, I know I’m meant to go far in life. I want to achieve success and prove myself. On the other hand, I would love to go travelling to far far away places, to explore all the awesomeness of the world. All of these are my dreams. I hope to achieve them all. ‘Thursday’s child has far to go.’ Amen.

Life Is A Gift

Life Is A Gift

Today before you say an unkind word - Think of someone who can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food - Think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife - Think of someone who's crying out to God for a companion.

Today before you complain about life - Think of someone who died too early on this earth.

Before you complain about your children - Think of someone who desires children but they're barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house when someone didn't clean or sweep - Think of the people who are living on the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive - Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job - Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another - Remember that not one of us is without sin.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down - Put a smile on your face and think: you're alive and still around!

Live happily always, people!

God Bless Everyone! :D

Meaningful Quotes II

10:45 AM Edit This 0 Comments »
Another compilation of my favourite quotes. They are my life lessons too. ;)

Top favourites are in red.

Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.

Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagreements.

Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

Try to make at least three people smile each day.

Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: "I am thankful for...", "Today I accomplished..."

What other people think of you is none of your business.

Take a 10-30 minute walk every day and while you walk, smile.

Forgive everyone for everything.

Dream more while you are awake.

Call your family often.

Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

Enjoy the ride. Remember that this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. Make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

Smile and laugh more. It will keep the energy vampires away.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn, pass all your tests. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of six.

When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, "My purpose is to... today."

Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

The best is yet to come.

Burn the candles, use the nice sheets. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

Make peace with your past, so it won't mess up the present.

However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, Empathy, and the 3 F's -- Faith, Family, Friends.

Prejudice

4:51 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
Prejudice comes in all forms. Prejudice cannot be eliminated completely but we can at least make the situation better. I dislike people who always think that they are at the top of the world.

If you think that you are superior over the others and do not intend to change the fact, stop reading and return to your superficial life. I have no prejudice against you but I want to lessen the prejudice against me.

I know of some people who have deep prejudice against people of different races. Just because they don’t share the same skin colour as us does not mean that they are not human. They breathe, eat and have attitudes too. Why do we need to descend to names-calling or shut them out from our lives?

Another form of prejudice I want to bring attention to is the educational background of people. No matter whether one is educated or not, try to treat them fairly and with respect. Other than that, if you gained acceptance into one of the top universities in the world, congratulations! But don’t let that get into your head and think that you are superior above the rest. I’m not being a sour puss but what I’m trying to say is people have choices.

God created us to be who we are. He created us as equal and loves us equally. But they way we treat each other is far from that. God has different plans for us too. Not everyone is destined to be a Cambridge or a Harvard graduate. We still need the teachers, farmers and even the cleaners in the world. Who are you to look down on them when God loves everyone the same??

So, think about it yourself, whether you are prejudiced or not. Take care!

Why Do We Shout?

12:25 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
An inspiring story that touches on how to communicate well with others. Enjoy!

One day, a professor asked his students, 'Why do we SHOUT instead of speak when we are ANGRY?'

All the students thought for a while. One answered, 'Because we lost our cool. That's why we SHOUT.'

The professor asked again, 'But the person is just right next to you, why can't we talk softly instead of SHOUTING?'

Everyone gave their opinions but none was accepted by the professor.

Finally, the professor explained. 'When we are ANGRY, our hearts drift apart. To mask the DISTANCE we feel, we instinctively SHOUT instead of speak so that the other party can hear us.'

'But as we SHOUT, we get ANGRIER. And we feel further drifted apart. So we SHOUT even louder...'

'It is the opposite when we are in love. Not only do we not shout, we whisper into each other ears. Why?'

'This is because our hearts are very close, almost never apart, which is why lovers always whisper. As our love deepens, we reach a state of communication where there is no need for words.'

'We could even understand each other well enough just by exchanging looks,' explained the professor.

'Therefore, when we are argue, DO NOT speak words that will make our hearts drift apart. WAIT for a few days. When you feel that your hearts are no longer far apart, pick up the conversation and continue from there.'

Wonderful, right? It is just a simple lesson told through a beautiful story. Cheers, people! :)

Let Your Burden Down For A While

12:11 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
I got this through e-mail. It is very meaningful. Do share it with friends who are going through stressful moments. ;)

A lecturer was giving a lecture to his students on stress management.

He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, "How heavy do you think this glass of water is?"

The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500gm.

"It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it.

If I hold it for a minute, it is OK.

If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm.

If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance.

It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

"If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier."

"What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again."

We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on.

So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down.

Don't carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow.

Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can.

What makes a Chinese - CHINESE?

11:29 AM Edit This 0 Comments »
I am a Chinese!! =)

Please check the list to see how Chinese you or your friends really are:

There are 29 ways to know if you're Chinese. You will laugh at yourself when you read all of them.

1. You unwrap gifts very carefully, so you can save and reuse the wrapping (and especially those ribbons). (Haha... I have to admit that I do this. It is more for memories sake, though...)

2. When there is a sale on toilet paper, you buy 100 rolls and store them in your closet or in the bedroom of an adult child who has move out. (Erm... I don’t do this. At all.)

3. You keep a Thermos of hot water available at all times. (Never done this myself. But there is a Thermos with hot water at home at all times. Yeah... typical Chinese family)

4. You save grocery bags, tin foil, and tin containers. You use the grocery bags to hold garbage. (Yup, my family and I do that for the garbage part. I don’t know what’s the reason to keep tin foil and tin containers though..) <br>

5. You hate to waste food:
(a) Even if you're totally full, when someone says they're going to throw away the leftovers on the table, you'll finish them. (Your mom will give a lecture about starving kids in Africa). (My mum doesn’t lecture. But me and my siblings were brought up the right way. Haha..)
(b) You have Tupperware in your fridge with three bites of rice or one leftover chicken wing. (It’s a sin to waste food if you can help it.)

6. You don't own any real Tupperware; only a cupboard full of used but carefully rinsed margarine tubs, take out containers, and jam jars. (I have Tupperware, but I still have the others. All at home.)

7. You have a collection of miniature shampoo bottles that you take every time you stay in a hotel. (I have a few that I find unique and added them to my collection of keepsakes.)

8. You wipe your plate and utensils or wash them in a small basin of hot water before you eat every time you go to a restaurant. (Haha.. I do this every time I am able to do this. And I thought everybody does that..)

9. You own a rice cooker and a slow cooker. (Not me, my mum.)

10. You wash your rice at least 2-3 times before cooking it. (The main purpose is to clean it thoroughly-mah..)

11. You fight (literally) over who pays the dinner bill. (I don’t really do this, but I have seen this many times.)

12. You have a teacup with a cover on it. (I have always wanted to get a cover but I always forget.)

13. If you're under age 20, you own a really expensive walkman if you're over 20, you own a really expensive camera. (Not walkman anymore. It’s called MP3.)

14. You're a wok user. (Not me. My mum.)

15. You only make long distance calls after 7pm. (Well... We are only free after 7-mah..)

16. You prefer your shrimp with the heads and legs still attached-it, means they're fresh. (There’s such a theory? I gotta try..)

17. You never call your parents just to say, ' Hi.' (That’s me. Enough said.)

18. If you don't live at home, when your parents call, they'll ask if you've eaten, even if it's midnight. (This is a Chinese custom. It’s always polite @ busybody to know whether the opposite has eaten or not.)

19. Your parents tell you to boil herbs and stay indoors when you get sick. They also tell you not to eat fried foods or baked foods because such food are ' heaty' (yeet hey in Cantonese). (Yup, typical Chinese parents and typical Chinese beliefs..)

20. You e-mail your Chinese friends at work, even though you only sit 10 feet apart. (Oh.. Have you tried Skype-ing with your friend who’s just sitting next to you? Well, it’s a great experience. Try it.)

21. You always cook too much. (Err.. I don’t cook..)

22. You eat every last grain of rice in your bowl, but don't eat the last piece of food on the table. (I will surely finish my rice. As for the last piece of food, it depends on whether it’s tasty or not ;P)

23. You starve yourself before going to 'All You Can Eat' buffet. (Haha.. I love this statement.. Typical Chinese.. But I don’t do it myself lol..)

24. You know someone who can get you a good deal on jewellery or electronics, computers. (This is cleverness. But I haven’t achieve it on my own yet.)

25. You own your own meat cleaver and sharpen it. (Oh yes, to murder people, oh yes..)

26. Your toothpaste tubes are all squeezed paper-thin. (This is called thrifty, OK? Haha..)

27. You call a sausage a hotdog. (I don’t do that. But I have seen people doing so.)

28. You wrap with napkins all the knives, spoons and forks of the airline that you fly on and put in your travel-bag as souvenirs. (Erm.. It wouldn’t get through the security checkpoint, would it?)

29. You never forget to take with you all the unused bath and facial tissues when you check out from the hotel because you believe that you have paid for it all. (Hey, I have an excuse.. I am a Chinese, OK?) Hahahaha..

I am definitely a Chinese. And I am proud to be one!

~~Sorry if I have offended anyone. I meant no discrimination against those of other races and I don't think that my race is superior above the rest. It's just that -- I am definitely proud to be a 龙的传人!

Miscommunication

12:04 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
This was passed on to me through e-mail. I thought that it was hilarious so I share it with you guys here. Haha.. I have a tendency to spread the stupidity. XD

A co-worker got a pen stuck inside our printer... He started to try and remove the pen, but I told him we don't have time for that now, just put a note on the printer to tell the folks not to use it and then report it to the Help Desk. So he grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled on it. I left before he finished the note.

About 20 minutes later, one of my techs came in laughing and said that when he was in the lobby, he saw a piece of paper on the printer and went to investigate.

Attached is what he found.

Sometimes things don't always come out the way you want them to..........

Now that you've smiled, good! We all need to smile every once in a while. ;)

l i t t l e Things in Life

12:55 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
Whatever that happens in life, happens for good..... so stop worrying about the future and forget the past.

After September 11, one company invited the remaining members of other companies who had been decimated by the attack on the Twin Towers to share their available office space. At a morning meeting, the head of security told stories of why these people were alive, and all the stories were just the 'L I T T L E' things.

As you might know, the head of the company survived that day because his son started kindergarten. Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts. One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off in time. One of them missed his bus. One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change. One's car wouldn't start. One went back to answer the telephone. One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as soon as he should have. One couldn't get a taxi. The one that struck everyone was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone......... all the little things that annoy me. I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment...

Next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can't seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, don't get mad or frustrated.

God is at work watching over you.

This is very true. We should always remember that everything takes place for a reason. Whether we feel very frustrated or we fail to get something, we should always look at the bigger picture. The 'little' things in life might not be little, after all...
